News: Glenbrook concert to support Bush School Cambodia

A variety concert to support Bush School Cambodia will be held on March 25th at St Finbar’s Church Hall, Levy St, Glenbrook, commencing 7.00pm. The concert is an important fundraiser to secure continuation of the school in the coming year. This concert will be the 7th to be held at St Finbar’s.

The Bush School is a not-for-profit project established by a Glenbrook family in 2010. It provides basic education and nutrition to the poorest children living near the famous Angkor temples in Siem Reap. Students K to Gr10 attend a day school which emphasises skills in the native language Khmer, as well as English, maths and computer, to best secure their economic future. Five trained Khmer teachers educate and care for the children in a school that is recognised as both vital and essential to the surrounding poor community.

The school is also a project of Winmalee Lions Club, who manage the accounts. Doug Frewer, original founder and member of Lions, has made regular visits to the school over a number of years, prior to the onset of Covid restrictions which temporarily closed the school. The school is now once again open and in full operation, with about 100 students attending. We hope to soon resume the annual visit by the Lions member.

The concert at St Finbar’s will feature fine musical acts by local performers. The program includes a  bracket of songs by the polished Moo Choir and a lively presentation by the Blue Mountains Musical Society, with items from their upcoming musical “School of Rock”. Also featured in the program is the exquisite harpist Maryanne Tucker and versatile singer/instrumentalist Ron Lyons.
At concert interval, an excellent supper will be available, followed by the drawing of some great raffle prizes.

The cost is $30 per person, $50 for family, with some concessions available.
All monies raised go directly to the operation of Bush School.

You may book by phoning Doug on 0403 303 943

Trees for Christine Project

We have a new project in support of our school in Siem Reap, Cambodia.
Titled “Trees for Christine” it is an initiative of our good friend Petra and her fellow supporters in the Czech Republic. Donors to to the program are invited to plant a tree (or at least have someone plant one for them) in a special Eco Trails farm not far from our school 30 km away in Siem Reap. The plot of land, owned by Michal Citavy and Sela Chham, will allow new forest planted to help restore lost forest in Cambodia, as well as offering important support for our school CBE Christine (referred to as “Bush School” in Australia”)

The price for each tree planting is USD 100, of which 10% provides the seedling and ongoing care, while 90% goes to the school budget ($10 for the tree, $90 for the school).
The tree planting is now well under way on the 2 hectare farm known as CK Eco-Trails Asia.
Our teachers, and others, are working hard planting the trees. Our Head Teacher Savorn has produced a lively video tour of the recently planted trees, showing individual labelling with donor’s name.

Full details of the project are provided at the Web address :
http://www.treesforchristine.com
Payment can be made on this site, by bank transfer, or by Secure PayPal.

Petra and Czech friends support the school under their local banner “Oci Dokoran” in Czech (or “Eyes Wide Open” in English). This is an excellent site that does much to promote our school, and also gives news about Trees for Christine. See http://www.ocidokoran.cz

We thank Petra, our Czech partner, and Michal and Sela of Eco Trails Farm, for their generous support of Trees for Christine project.
We encourage our Australian friends to take part, plant a beautiful mahogany tree, and contribute to the welfare of our students. This project is named in honor of Doug’s late wife, Christine.

News from Bush School Cambodia

CIMG2043

Founder Doug Frewer recently returned from a visit to the school in Siem Reap. He reports that good progress is being made and that the school has become a valued community asset.  Five qualified and dedicated teachers provide essential lessons in the native Khmer language, as well as English, mathematics, cultural studies and basic computer skills. A small library provides general reading in both English and Khmer. All this points to a brighter future for these children in their working lives.
it is therefore important that adequate funds are available to continue the work of the school in coming years. Most recently, a successful art show was held in the Old Market area of Siem Reap, raising valuable funds.

To further support this year’s  budget, the annual Variety Concert for Bush School will be held on Saturday 13th April at St Finbar’s Church Hall, Levy St., Glenbrook NSW. This will be a lively  concert featuring local music groups. The concert commences at 7.30pm and promises to be a wonderful family night and important fundraiser for the school. Tickets are $25 per person, $45 for family.

Bookings can be made by phoning Doug on 47015459 or 0403 303 943.
